Qualifiers research-article. Intended Outcomes: This gamification approach aims to motivate CS students to start and complete PAs earlier, as well as instill software engineering best practices.

Application Design: To motivate students to start and finish assignments early, an open-source gamification system called the Leaderboard was developed. Using gamified points, the Leaderboard rewards students who pass PA unit tests well before the assignment is due. The system is fully automated using Github Classroom, a build server, and the Moodle learning management system.

The intrinsic value of any method of predicting failure resides in its accuracy and in its generality. The method must correctly predict failure or its absence and it must be applicable to any code base.

This work is a good step forward that meets about half the goal: it correctly predicts the likelihood of failure for an incremental release of a specific, mature project. The value of this partial success must not be underestimated, as it represents another stepping stone toward achieving a goal that is as fundamental as it is elusive.
